Our team is ten years old and has already made an impact in South Africa. One of the first projects we worked on was Debt Wise Solutions, one of the very few systems to be accredited by the National Credit Regular, for debt counselling and payment processing, in South Africa. In partnership with an engineering firm, we developed Hlalani IQ, a construction project management solution that is helping create jobs in the Garden Route and build better quality RDP houses.
Our month is planned in advance and our teammates have projects allocated to them so when you walk in in the morning, you’ll know what project you’re working on for the day, this does sometimes change if something urgent comes up but it’s mostly quite consistent.
All of our tasks are managed via an issue tracker (Bitbucket, GitHub or Jira). You’ll have a list of tasks assigned to you and be responsible for making progress on the issues. You’ll have a lot of autonomy but at the same time won’t be left to wonder what on earth to do next.
Some days you’ll work on front end only tasks and other days you’ll be working on complicated reporting or custom integrations with a variety of APIs. Our work varies quite a lot.
Your workstation will be a Linux desktop, most likely running Mint but you’ll need to be comfortable with Windows so that you can support end users if you need to; we don’t get many support calls. We primarily communicate via issue tracker, Google Hangouts (for IM) and Skype for voice calls and IM with clients.
Some of the tools we use include: Harvest, GitHub, BitBucket, Jira, Gmail, Google Hangouts, Skype, Atom, Gimp, Inkscape and Invision.
